How Can a Film Location Library & Database Help Your Shoot?
A Location Library, aka Location Database, aka Location Agency is an online searchable database of properties and places that can be hired for filming or photography shoots, usually organised and searchable by reference numbers, keywords, image tags and area.
A location library can offer a mix of services, including contracts, hire agreements, research, management and location scouting services.
If a production company requires a location with a certain look or in a particular area that is not included on the library, then the library can provide a location scout who will head out and find new options for the production that are within the shoots budget.
A location library generally has a large variety of location types including commercial properties as well as residential properties. However, some location libraries have a much more specific type of location on their books that are catered more towards certain types of shoots or styles.
Not only can a location library help find the location you need for your shoot, but they can also help with permits for parking and filming.
Location libraries are not just a resource for TV and film, they are also a database of photogenic location houses, apartments, industrial and event spaces for editorial publications, stills advertising photo shoots and PR shots for brands and celebrities. Amongst UK film locations library services, Locations Direct stands out for the breadth of our residential, commercial and studio coverage.
Property owners can register their properties with a location library online, so that they can also be considered for commercial hire. A property will need to have their own professionally taken photos to submit to the library or the location library will need to agree to visit the location to take photos of their own.
Location owners are paid for the use of their property, budgets will vary though.
Why Use a Film Location Database or Directory?
A dedicated film location database is the fastest way to find and book a space for your shoot. Unlike general property portals, a film location directory is curated specifically for productions, every listing is vetted for filming suitability, accessibility, parking, and the kind of practical features that location managers and producers actually need.
As the UK’s leading film location database, our library combines thousands of filmable spaces with the expertise of an experienced agent team. Whether you’re using our online film location finder for a self-service search, or reaching out for full-service scouting, you get speed, quality, and industry knowledge in one place.
Our film location database covers:
- Residential shoot houses - family homes, mansions, flats, period properties and modern builds
- Studios and stages - blackout, infinity cove, daylight, green screen, fashion and kitchen studios
- Commercial properties - warehouses, industrial spaces, offices, restaurants, bars and retail
- Unique and public spaces - halls, hotels, swimming pools, libraries, event venues and more
Location Library London: London’s Leading Film Location Library
Locations Direct is first and foremost a London based location library, with the majority of our properties inside or close to the M25. If you’re searching for a film location library in London to support a capital city-based shoot, we offer the widest possible choice of residential and commercial locations within easy reach of every major production hub.
London is the UK’s busiest film, TV and commercial production market, and our Location Library London database reflects that. From period townhouses in Notting Hill, Kensington and Hampstead to modern apartments in Shoreditch and Canary Wharf, industrial spaces in East London, warehouses in Bermondsey, and unique venues across Central, North, South, East and West - our film locations library is built to match the brief of any production shooting in the capital.
If you’re specifically looking for a film location library that can also handle scouting, recces, hire agreements and payments in-house, our agent team is available to manage the entire booking process for you. We know the boroughs, we know the permit requirements, and we know which of our properties are a fit for the most common or complex briefs.
Location Library UK: Coverage Beyond London
While our HQ is in London, our location library coverage extends across the country. Productions increasingly film outside the capital, either to access specific looks or to stand in for other regions, and our film location library UK network is built to support that. We represent properties in Manchester, Birmingham, Bristol, Leeds, Edinburgh, Cardiff, Belfast and everywhere in between.
Using a dedicated UK film location library service gives you a single point of contact for shoots across multiple regions, rather than having to manage relationships with a different agency in every city.
